The opportunity:
It’s an exciting time to join Markel as our business grows. We have an exciting brand-new opportunity for a Business Systems Analyst to join our team (3 days in the office / 2 days from home), based in our Manchester office.

The Direct Division offer a range of products including professional indemnity, public liability, employers’ liability, D&O, property, occupational personal accident, legal representation and employment cover, and cyber. Our distribution channels fall into 3 key categories; markets which are created through direct-to-consumer channels; online or via our UK call centre, through our white label introducer network and our most recent development is the creation of our digital partner proposition providing API integrations into Insurtech’s or broker platforms.

We have two retail brands that attract customers from different sectors of the micro/SME market.

  • Markel Direct – has been running for 10 years and targets multiple sectors including IT, fitness, Therapists, Photographers and Charities & Community Group.
  • Caunce O’Hara – offers specialist insurance to contractors, consultants, freelancers, self-employed professionals and to the oil & rail sectors.

This position is integral to our division, serving as the link between our organisation’s IT capabilities and business objectives. The role involves overseeing our business systems, optimising business operations, and ensuring effective systems management. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical, business, and interpersonal skills. They should be technically proficient, demonstrating familiarity with software development practices and tools such as SQL and business intelligence applications, to improve productivity and business systems efficiencies.

We are seeking a self-motivated and detail-oriented Business Systems Analyst to work with our end users, elicit and document requirements, perform analysis, and support the execution of our backlog, which consists of small enhancements and larger projects. Acting as a liaison between business partners and technical teams, this role ensures that system development and enhancements are aligned with business needs.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Work with our Business Systems Manager and analyse current business processes and workflows to identify areas for improvement
  • Collaborate with internal partners to gather and document business requirements.
  • Develop and present reports to support recommendations for system process improvements
  • Work with IT teams and software developers to design and implement software solutions
  • Conduct training sessions for employees on new systems and processes, developing training literature and materials to speed up processes
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented solutions
  • Perform gap analysis and serve as a liaison between business and technology partners to drive solution delivery
  • Document functional specifications detailing requirements and other project needs.
  • Participate in QA testing activities such as test plan creation, test execution, and review of QA artifects. Assisting with acceptance integration and testing and developing project plans
  • Support continuous delivery, optimisation, monitoring, release management, and support of the end-to-end release process
  • Installing elements of systems design, including wireframes, business rules, data migration rules and other detailed deliverables
  • Facilitating the discussion of requirements among partners and documenting requirements to provide data-driven recommendations
  • Reporting to business leaders and team members. Providing regular progress reports to management
  • Gathering intelligence from corporate executives and middle managers about needs and future growth
  • Identifying potential solutions and preparing proposals for modified or replacement systems
  • Working closely together with technical staff, such as Developers to ensure the technical viability of solutions
